讀小學時，表兄家中敦聘係出少林的武術名師來教授拳術，耳濡目染之下，他對武術產生了極大的興趣，並奠定了深厚的根基。陳氏就讀嘉義農林學校時，當時的柔道教授有二位，即濱田先生和角田先生，二位教官訓練均極嚴格。五年級時，學校特聘台南州廳警務部總教官岩淵法先生來指導，岩淵教官是國家級的教練與柔道裁判。在名師指導之下，陳氏柔道技術突飛猛進，參與校外比賽每每均攻無不克，所向披靡，成為轟動一時的柔道明星，為該校的柔道隊隊長。五年級時，勇奪全台中等學校冠軍，在校期間即獲柔道三段段位。
陳氏在少年時，曾聽一武術耆老概述『落地金勾剪』一術，即自行揣摩。每逢假期，即於北港溪畔的沙洲上架起一支竹桿，冒著烈日寒風苦練，獨創『腳剪』絕招。此一招式，在當時中等學校柔道比賽規則中，不被認為是有效攻擊，但能以此招式先挫對方的銳氣，再行其他有效攻擊就頗能致勝。因此陳氏的『腳剪』絕招，不僅在台灣極負盛名，即使在戰後，日本各大學的柔道冠軍隊來台作友誼比賽時，亦常被他以此招式製伏，因此傳誦台、日二地。
嘉農畢業後，陳氏考上海南特別師範學校。當時在台報考人數二百多人，只錄取台籍二人及日籍一人，可見他實是文武雙全的人才。師範學校畢業後，擔任了數月的小學教師，旋即被派任為文昌縣重興小學校長。他因痛恨日人的暴虐統治而放棄教職，之後加入海南島上的抗日義勇游擊隊，迭經危難，因不顧生死，屢建奇功，榮獲干城獎章。
台灣光復後，他從海南島返台。之後參加國內各項國術比賽，也都能勇奪冠軍。 1955年，在台北三軍球場舉行第一屆國術比賽，陳氏一路過關斬將，進入總冠軍賽。當時的對手是任教於政工幹校，曾在南京國術大賽獲得冠軍的劉漢，幾經激戰，最後陳氏以『腳剪』絕招擊敗劉漢，榮獲冠軍。
陳氏返鄉後，曾在東石農校任教十五年。退休後，在嘉義市創辦了『和平柔道館』，專門培育武學人才，得意門生在各大專院校裡擔任柔道國術教練者，已有百人以上。後繼有人，也是人生一大樂事。

除了武術之外，陳戊寅也好習書法與文學。論其武術成就，屢膺柔道國手、國家教練暨國際裁判，位居九段范士高階，為柔壇泰斗，並屢獲國術比賽徒手及兵器冠軍；論其書法成就，龍飛鳳舞，頻獲日本書藝院首獎，並受聘為該院鑑查員。論其詩學成就，能融貫古今中外精萃而創新格局，獨領風騷，非僅深諳漢詩，尤精日本和歌，實為不可多得的奇才。

陳戊寅是嘉義和平道館的指導老師，也是鄭吉祥的啟蒙老師，指導原則從禮節教起，訓練身心、修身養性。陳戊寅曾表示：「鄭吉祥君自幼修習於和平柔道館，資質聰穎，身手敏捷，而其好學勤修之精神，尤堪讚許，乃能成為柔壇奇葩，屢任國手，其優異之成績，首震國際競技場上。」
練習過程中，曾經摔斷手，一度想放棄，卻因父親的一句話，「做任何事都該有始有終！」從此堅定志向，鄭吉祥：「做為運動員就要投入，就要拿第一，在國三那年看到東京奧運的轉播賽，便立定志嚮往最高榮譽奧運邁進。」
鄭吉祥：「當時剛從文化大學畢業，考上預官，被國放部徵調主持國軍柔道隊，入選慕尼黑奧運會，真可謂三喜臨門！」身為奧運國手，印象最深刻的比賽卻不是奧運，而是1974年漢城（首爾當時名為漢城）舉辦的亞洲錦標賽，拿到在日本之下、韓國之上的銀牌，以其精湛之左右內割，配合巧妙左右釣進腰接攻壓制技術，過關斬將晉級決賽，對手為屢獲世界冠軍的日本選手南喜陽，兩人纏鬥四分鐘之久，雖僅獲亞軍，然其表現令日隊寒栗，全場為之喝采，首創我國柔道國際比賽最佳成績。
隔年1975年，文化大學創辦人張其昀召回，專任中國文化大學柔道教練，台大以及警官學院也力邀指導，鄭吉祥認為，只要自己努力出一番名堂，別人一定會認可，現今台灣選手過度缺乏自信、毅力，他呼籲年輕學子不要輕易放棄，國家無法援助所有運動員，必須自己拿出成績，爭取權益。
年輕時的鄭吉祥，憑著天不怕第不怕的氣魄，在柔道界闖蕩，即使到了人生地不熟的慕尼黑或日本，仍然隻身一人到外地亂逛，他表示：「因為我肢體語言豐富呀！即使德國人邀請到他家，我當然敢去，當時我認為自己是強人，什麼都不用怕。」同時他也認為，指導過的學生中，皆缺乏這種特質，做為一運動選手，天份很重要，心理特質也很重要，放寬心，對自己要有信心，在外地多結交些朋友，心境要開朗外放。
